This session will focus on how to examine your own mindset and develop instructional strategies that will help you support the success of all students, especially those in your classroom who are growing up in very different environments than you did. Participants will examine how poverty impacts the development of students' neural pathways, and what they can do to address that. According to educational researchers, "In their quest to do better, educators typically focus on improving their skills at teaching core subjects, such as reading, math, and science. But research shows that students who develop social and emotional learning (SEL) skills and academic mindsets (for example, a belief that one’s abilities can improve with effort) do better in school" (Farnham, et al., 2015). Participants will also learn the top three research-based strategies to support students living in poverty.
